Mold resistance is one of the toughest challenges in modern building science. Builders, architects, and environmental professionals all share a common frustration: how do we achieve mold-resistance in real-world, moisture-laden environments? The answer, until recently, has been: you can't.
Why Mold Resistance Has Seemed Impossible
The Fundamental Problem: Bioavailability of Biocides
Biocides are substances capable of killing or inhibiting microorganisms. However, there's a fundamental paradox in coatings: once biocides are locked into a cured film, they're no longer bioavailable.
Shortcomings of Traditional Mold-Resistant Technologies
Quaternary Ammonium Compounds ("Quats") — Water-soluble, easily washed away, degrade rapidly. In lab tests, even highly concentrated quats failed to prevent mold regrowth.
Encapsulating Paints and Coatings — Biocides are locked within a continuous cured film. If moisture penetrates behind the film, mold may still grow underneath.
Mold's Survival Advantage
Mold is highly adaptable. Under the right conditions, spores germinate within hours and produce mycotoxins.
Superstratum Endurance Coating: A New Class of Chemistry
Water-Based, Yet Water-Resistant
EC dries into an invisible, breathable film on any building material.
Smart Polymer Matrix
The polymer creates a microscopic speckled pattern with nodes encapsulating biocidal agents. Gaps preserve breathability and allow biocides to migrate to the surface under wet conditions.
Water Activates, Not Washes Away
When exposed to moisture, the polymer shifts biocides to the surface. Once moisture evaporates, it shifts back. EC is a smart polymer: water triggers its protective action.
Labs and Customers Putting Endurance Coating to the Test
Lab Test Case – Extreme Water Exposure
After 24 hours of continuous water, the EC sample still showed no mold growth.
Mold Remediator Test Case – Quat Comparison
After two months, Superstratum EC still showed no signs of growth while quats were overrun by Day 15.
Duct Cleaning Test Case – ASTM D 3273-21
The treated liner scored "10" on the ASTM scale—zero visible mold growth throughout all 4 weeks.
